Ready to go on the family road trip? Bags packed everyone in the car and you are on your way! All of a sudden, your car starts smoking and you pull over. It’s not the end of the world, but it seems all your plans are ruined.
This isn’t a hypothetical. This sort of situation is far too real and happens everyday to people just like you and me. So why do cars overheat, what do we do if our car overheats, and how can we fix or stop it in the first place?
Why do cars overheat?
Just like many things, engine overheating is complicated. There can be many reasons why your car may be overheating from something wrong with the cooling system, a leak, broken radiator fan, or a clog.
Nonetheless, overheating isn’t something you don’t want to sit on. Leaving this issue for too long can lead to further damage in your vehicle.
What are signs that your vehicle is overheating?
Your vehicle is meant to run at a certain temperature, so how do you know when it is too hot, and at what point is the damage irreversible? Although engine overheating is usually manageable, some signs to look out for include:
- A Strange Smell coming from the engine. This could be from coolant leaking and getting burnt up from the heat.
- The Engine Temperature Gauge will be pointed towards the H symbol on your Dashboard.
- Steam coming out of the hood of the Car.
Although engine overheating can be serious do not be alarmed if it ever happens. Just pull over the vehicle as quickly as possible. Pull over, turn off the vehicle and wait for the engine to cool down. In the meantime you can check your vehicle’s coolant.
What to do when your car overheats?
Stay Calm –
The last thing you want to do when your car is having issues is freak out. Other drivers may not realize what is going on and may not be paying attention to you. Your safety should be your #1 concern.
Pull Over –
Pull over is a safe location away from other cars and where it is easily accessible to road side assistance. You may think you can make it to a mechanic before your engine gives out completely, but by then you may damage the vehicle more and it may cost more to repair.
Turn Your Car off and Wait –
Waiting for your vehicle to cool down is very important when your engine is overheating. Just like in the previous situation, you may be able to make it where you want to go, but you may risk more severe damage to your vehicle.
Don’t Wait to Fix –
Waiting to fix your car or just bandaging the problem can cause more issues for you in the future. In most cases, an overheating engine will not resolve itself and needs to be looked at by a mechanic.
